Then the men of
(Jdg 8:22-27)
This is definitely an interesting development in the glorious account of Gideon. He has just chased down the Midianites (15,000 of them had remained) and finished them of taking their kings. He punishes the men of Succoth and Penuel for their unbelief in the power of God, and unwillingness to participate. Then, after killing the two kings of the Midianites, Gideon is put in a weird spot… the people want to make him king!!!
We see 2 things happen here, first we see Gideon’s humble response (a good thing); then we see his misguided memorial (a bad thing). Gideon, having done so well as a man of faith blows it big time… it seems like a small mistake, but it prepares
Gideon creates an Ephod. This was something only to be worn by the High Priest; something only to be used at the tabernacle. He creates it as a sort of memorial to what God had done, and it creates problems. You see, instead of pointing these people back to GOD’S WAY, he constructs for them a shortcut, a sort of easy way out. Right their, in their own city, the people were given a way to seek the Lord and worship HIM. Only, pretty soon it wasn’t Him getting the worship; instead the whole thing turned into stinky old religion. IDOLATRY… a departure from truly seeking God, now they were worshipping a silly Ephod! Even Gideon was ensnared by this!!!
So what is the lesson in this for us? It is quite simple; don’t turn yesterday’s victories into today’s idols. Gideon had accomplished a lot, but his job wasn’t done… if only he had restored the worship as God had intended! Our work is never finished; there is always more the Lord would have us to do! I pray that you would never turn past victories into present day idols that keep you from future works the Lord has called you to do… That would be as tragic as the end of Gideon!

If Gideon was a realy a man of God, I don't think he would have let the people make him king. It just goes to show how easly we can be influenced by people, and how easly they can make us turn from God. If Gideon, a man strong in faith, so much so that he trusted God would help him win a battle with just 300 solders on his side, and yet he was influenced so easy. I think that means we all have to extra carefull when we are hanging out with our friends who are not Christians.
PS I was looking a older posts yesterday and I watched the "Youth Leader" episode 1, very cool. Do Tommy and Hector do stuff like that all the time, or did they just do it for the "show". If they act like that all the time they are soooo much cooler than my youth leaders(no offense to them). When Tommy said "I am going to mail myself to another country" where is he going to go?
I am going to mail myself to IRELAND!
I arrive in July...
Hector is kind of boring, but I'm definitely that cool...
JUST KIDDING! Hector and I were just having some fun when we made that video... we don't get to do that kind of thing all the time because we are busy, but we definitely love to have fun.
Elizabeth, you are so right about being careful with your non-christian friends. It is much easier to be pulled down than to pull someone up.
Why are you going to Ireland? I would rather go to Italy or France.
Our church is going there on a missions trip. This will be my 5th time going there!
I went to Italy on my honeymoon... it was beautiful. We had a layover in France but we didn't leave the airport.
